A neighbour-joining tree reveals phylogenetic relationships of 23 S. aureus strains isolated from the volunteers in the study. The neighbor joining tree was based on the concatenated sequences of each of the 23 sequence types noted in the combined dataset, as determined using the S. aureus MLST database (http://saureus.mlst.net/) and implemented in MEGA v6.06 using Kimura-2-parameter distances. The relationships shown were based on 1000 re-samplings for bootstrapping. Each clonal complex (CC) is composed of STs that cluster with a ≥70% bootstrap confidence value.
